Browse Benton County Civil Dockets

Start with the kind of dispute. A Benton County civil docket search depends on where the case belongs, because two courts split the work. Benton Superior Court keeps the general civil files along with domestic, probate, guardianship, and protection cases. Benton County District Court takes the smaller side: limited civil and small claims. Once you know the court, the rest falls into place. Public portals can pull up a docket and its event history, though access to the actual documents varies by system. The Benton County Clerk supplies Superior Court records, while District Court handles its own files. So note the cause number and the settings first, then ask the right office for a pleading, order, judgment, or certified copy.

How to Search Benton County Civil Dockets

Begin with the Washington Courts Case Records search. Choose Benton Superior or Benton District as the court. A cause number is the fastest way in. With a name search, you need the party's first and last name or the entity name, plus a civil case type and filing year. Check the caption, filing date, court, and case type. Do that before assuming a hit is your case. Superior case information has historically run through Odyssey and JIS. For District Court, Benton County points users to re:SearchWA during the limited-jurisdiction transition. Getting documents is a separate matter. The Benton Clerk notes its Odyssey setup lacks a Document Manager. So a Superior pleading or order means going to the clerk next.

  1. Decide whether Superior or District Court has the matter.
  2. Enter the cause number, or search a party name with year and type.
  3. Check the caption, court, and filing date against known details.
  4. Read the newest setting and outcome rather than one older event.
  5. Request the named document from the custodian of that court.

Benton’s $100,000 District Civil Limit

Money sets the dividing line. Benton District Court reports concurrent civil jurisdiction up to $100,000. Small claims there run up to $10,000 for a natural person. A business tops out at $5,000. Anything bigger, or assigned elsewhere, belongs in Superior Court, the general-jurisdiction forum. Family, probate, guardianship, adoption, and protection cases are not sorted by dollar amount at all. They sit in their own Superior categories.

Quick venue check: ordinary limited civil and small claims may be in District Court. General civil, domestic, probate, guardianship, adoption, parentage, and related matters point to Superior Court and the Benton County Clerk.

The Benton District Court page describes its jurisdiction and current system transition.

That split is why a full Benton County docket search has to cover both court levels.

What a Benton County Civil Docket Shows

A civil docket opens with the basics. You get the court, cause number, case type, caption, filing date, status, and the parties' roles. From there the entries run in order: service, an answer, motions, hearing notices, orders, settlement or pretrial settings, trial activity, judgment, and post-judgment enforcement. Each line records what happened in the file. It does not reproduce the paper itself. The docket is a map rather than the document.

Case number Superior numbers may follow YY-2-NNNNN-C, with type 2 for civil.
Parties Plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, plus counsel when shown.
Filing events Complaint or petition, answer, service, motions, notices, orders, and discovery events.
Settings Short or longer motions, summary judgment, protection orders, pretrial, or trial readiness.
Outcome Settlement, dismissal, nonsuit, default, agreed judgment, trial judgment, writ, or appeal.

When you order a document, use the cause number. A docket line marked judgment, garnishment, or order is just the locator for the real record behind it.

District Versus Superior Civil Records

Superior files live with the Benton County Clerk. District Court keeps its own civil and small-claims records. The Clerk warns it cannot hand over District documents. So the office you ask depends on the court that heard the case. City public-record pages are no substitute for a court file either. That holds when a civil infraction was filed through Benton District Court.

The District Case Record Request shows the details needed for a focused request.

Its form asks for Civil as the type. You supply case numbers, name, birth date if known, a record description, the specific documents, intended use, and requester contact information.

Types of Benton County Civil Cases on the Docket

Superior Court splits its civil docket into general civil suits. Separate categories cover domestic matters, probate and guardianship, adoption and parentage, judgments, and protection matters. District Court covers ordinary civil claims within its limit. It also handles small claims, anti-harassment, and civil infractions. The category matters in practice. The case type you pick shapes both the search and the label a hearing wears on the calendar.

Complaint or petition: the filing that opens or defines a civil request.

Note for docket: the local filing used to identify a motion and desired hearing.

Summary judgment: a request to decide an issue without a full trial when the legal standard is met.

Unlawful detainer: the term used on the Benton schedule for an eviction-related case.

Default judgment: a judgment entered after a party fails to respond or appear as permitted.

Writ or garnishment: post-judgment tools that may create later docket events.

Benton Friday Civil Docket Changes

A local change hits the Superior weekly schedule. It starts with the June 26, 2026 Benton civil docket. Under-ten motions now sit Fridays at 8:30 a.m. Summary judgments and over-ten motions moved to Fridays at 10:00 a.m. Unlawful detainers stayed put at Fridays at 1:30 p.m. Treat those times as context rather than a promise. The county warns that assignments shift and holiday needs can reshape daily dockets. For copies, the District fee schedule lists what the court charges.

That schedule keeps filing charges separate from record research, ordinary copies, and certification. Confirm the current amount before you pay.

Settings and Hearings on Benton County Civil Dockets

Benton's published calendar uses labels such as Civil Under Ten Motions, Summary Judgments and Over Ten Motions, Unlawful Detainers, and Civil Protection Orders. It also lists domestic settlement and pretrial conferences. Trial readiness categories appear too. A motion docket note carries the title, cause number, short title, date, and attorneys. It also lists the nature of the motion. The moving party is named there as well. One local rule tells attorneys to file and serve that note no later than 11 calendar days before the desired hearing. That deadline is process context, not a blanket rule for every case type. What governs is the rule and order applying to your actual matter. A current notice or signed order always outranks a generic weekly grid.

When a Benton Civil Document Is Missing

A case can show up in a portal without its document. Benton's Odyssey warning makes that routine for Superior results. Other limits exist too. A restricted family record, protected identifier, sealed filing, migration delay, or retention issue can hide material. If jurisdiction is uncertain, search the other court. Never assume the same case exists in both.

  1. Copy the exact cause number and docket-entry title.
  2. Confirm whether the custodian is the County Clerk or District Court.
  3. Request the specific pleading, order, judgment, or recording, not the whole file by default.
  4. Give the hearing date and parties’ names when requesting a recording.
  5. Ask about certification if the copy must carry the clerk’s seal.

The District request form covers recordings too. It asks for the case number, hearing date, party name, and any extra details. Pay in person or through nCourt at 1-855-873-9709, which adds a vendor fee.

Public Access to Benton County Civil Dockets

Washington GR 31 sets the baseline. Most Benton County court records are open to the public. A statute, court rule, order, or case law can still close the door. GR 22 and GR 15 step in when identifiers need protection. A file can also be restricted or sealed. So a docket line may exist for an adoption, dependency, health, or safety matter. The public cannot see the substance behind it.

Skip the Public Records Act for a normal civil case file. That is not its job. Benton Superior sends case-record requests to the clerk under GR 31. GR 31.1 covers administrative judicial records. The practical channels are several. Use the statewide search, Odyssey or re:SearchWA, a phone call, the clerk counter or terminal, a mail or online record request, and the court reporter for transcripts.

Paying a fee is not the same as reading the file. A county payment page can sit beside District services. A receipt never becomes the civil docket, the pleadings, or the judgment. The District response page shows where that service line falls.

Benton District Court response and payment service instructions

A docket, its pleadings, and the final judgment are records the court keeps no matter how any fee or debt gets paid.

Walk-in requests go to the Benton County Clerk. The office is in Suite A210 at the Justice Center, 7122 W Okanogan Place in Kennewick. Benton District Court sits in Suite A110 at the same building. Weekday counter hours run 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. except holidays. In-person payments stop at 3:30 p.m. There is also a Prosser District branch at 620 Market Street, but call ahead before driving there with an old file or a certification request.

One more split matters. Judicial administrative records travel under GR 31.1. The case pleadings, orders, and dockets are GR 31 records the clerk holds. If you want a judgment in a civil case, that is not a policy or budget file. Sending the request down the wrong route wastes time. That office never keeps the civil docket you need.

Benton Civil Filing Volume in Context

Washington Courts counted 1,629 Benton Superior civil filings from January through June 2026. That number covers only the official civil category. It leaves out District small claims, family matters, and single docket events. A filing is just the start. A case can later generate service entries, answers, motions, orders, hearings, a judgment, and enforcement steps. So filing totals say nothing. They do not measure the weight of a daily court calendar.

Numbers like that are the reason a cause number matters so much in a docket search. Names repeat, change, or show up in several roles. The number pins your request to one file. Volume alone never proves a case is dragging. A sound method works better: pick the court, narrow by year and case type, check the caption, then ask for the exact document. Remember what each source is for. An annual report measures workload, a docket records procedure, and a signed order states the ruling.
